Russia linked APT groups are suspected to be targeting European politicians ahead of the elections. The groups most notable here: APT28, Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm, and Sednit. This cyber-campaign has been ongoing since 2017, and has been mostly focused on Europe and South America. APT28 in particular has been active since 2007.

Its suspected that this focus is to use any information that may be gathered to make more informed political decisions, or to gather sensitive information on a candidate and use it against them leading up to the elections. These suspicions have yet to be confirmed.
