ProtonMail was blocked in Russia recently, after kids were using it as a vector from which to spread anti-regime propaganda. A Russian telecom service was instructed in a letter from Russian FSB, to block traffic in-route to ProtonMail, under the fears that terrorists were using to communicate. This is not the first time the Russian government has tightened its grip on the internet; even in recent days, where over 15,000 Russian citizens took to the streets to protest for more internet freedom.

Clearly we should not be surprised; Russia is only second to China in terms of how it views internet freedom. But with major sports event just around the corner, being hosted in Russia, there is a quality argument to be made by either side.
