It has been discovered that in the Xinjiang province of China, tourists have had spyware installed on their phones, unbeknownst to them, bu guards at the many heavily guarded checkpoints that dot that same province.

The spyware has mainly been found on the phones of those people coming from neighboring Kyrgyzstan. It has been used to target Muslim minorities, which have been a heavily oppressed minority in the region since 2014. According to a joint investigation by the New York Times, the Guardian, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, and others, the spyware is used to collect call records, texts, calendar entries, contacts and sends them all to a server stored at the checkpoint.

This is not the first instance of this, in 2017, Chinese authorities ordered residents of Xinjian to install a similar spyware on their phones, as a defense against searching for or being exposed to terrorist affiliated propaganda.
