Social media, the new and hip way to communicate and interact, with friends and family, co-workers and people in far off lands. It started with My-Space, which was big for a while, then it would be later be overtaken by Facebook. This would signal the coming of Twitter, Instagram, and the list goes on. It was right after Facebook that social media exploded; and people became more connected than they ever had been. Since 2008 we have seen an increasing hike in social media users to this year. According to statistics over 3.1 billion people use a social app of some kind. https://www.smartinsights.com/wp-content...IEWpng.png

With an average penetration rate of over 50%, and over 4 billion internet users globally, this is expected to increase by a large degree. Or it could drop; this would be due to a number of reasons. The platforms abusing user data, or not being proactive in securing against breaches or attacks. We have to remember, social media is prime real estate for information on people's personal lives, and even they themselves aren't as proactive as they should be. A whole generation born and raised on the web, and only a small percentage actually understand cyber-security enough to be marginally safe.

Although, social media has its drawbacks; Facebook facilitated the spread of "fake news" which has caused some countries like Myanmar to fall into chaos, and likely was  utilized in the same manner to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 U.S elections. https://www.wired.com/story/how-facebook...n-myanmar/ Also, this: https://www.wired.com/story/inside-faceb...s-of-hell/ While the concept of social media is amazing, and it has indeed connected tens of millions across the world, it is something that can be and has been abused.

Facebook is in the lead, when it comes to blunders and "incidents". Very recently over 50 million users were compromised when a flaw in the "View As" feature allowed malicious users to steal [access tokens]. These access tokens are similar to login keys, as they are used to keep the user logged into Facebook if they happen to forget their password. Facebook stated that:

"Our investigation is still in its early stages. But it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As”, a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app.

First, we’ve fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement."

They finally stated that 90 million users will need to login and read the notification explaining what happened. This is still an ongoing investigation within Facebook, as stated by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg and Guy Rosen, they are unsure whether hackers had retrieved any user's personal information. With Facebook's track record these past couple years, and right before the U.S midterm elections, this could spell more hot water for the social media giant. https://www.recode.net/2018/9/28/1791453...-passwords
